City guide

The city of Kaunas
"Namu Zidinys" is closeby to many attractive places. Below here, is some of them listed, and the bus can take you to all these places.

Only 300 metres away is the botanical garden - beautiful big area with lots of flowers, trees and a gigantic greenhouse with many tropical plants.

Not far away, about 800metres is the "Rimi" shoppingcenter, and in there is other small shops like "vaistine", that is the pfarmacy, there is also a tailor, a clothing butique among a bit others.

"Namu Zidinys" is only 4 km, from the "Akropolis" shoppingcenter in centrum of Kaunas, there is 5,5km to the city zoo, and about 8 km away is the cosmetic health center, It is called "Luxus Kirugi" or "Ortopedijos technikos" in Lithuania, where one of the leading dental and surgery clinics in Europe is locatet.

The busstop is located only 500metres away, and again there is busstop 800metres away close to "Rimi hypermarket."

The big market "Urmas" that runs low prices, is only 9 km away, and the new "MEGA" shopping center is 12km away, that features fx. a huge aquarium with sharks etc.

In the downtown city of Kaunas, there are a lot of historical attractions like bars, restaurants, castle ruins, beautiful buildings and churces.

The price for two meals at the airport café, was 6,10 Euro, and that was a high price, since a "magarita pizza" at the place called "Can Can Pizza" only cost 1,39 Euro.

The supermarkets are not much different in prices on the food then ours in Denmark, though the ecological products are more expensive since it is not so developed in Lithuania yet, but things like a work calender only cost around 4 Euros - thats at the moment around 30 DKR.

There is many abbandon buldings from the time that sovjet went away from Lithuania, like a big gray building across the street. It was never finish, since the buisness man who built it, worked in the sovjet goverment, and when when Lithuania broke free, he went bankrupt, and also had to flee the area, cause of his love for the sovjet union. I find it quite sad that these building are left to perishes. Youll also see a lot of bigger buildings in the city center, that are left to perishes, because of tinanciel problems. The houses that are occupied, in the sized like the one in the picture, has usually several different familys living there, all sharing the rents.

A grand libary buildt during the sovjet time, is still in function, and holds different events for the public every year, to celebrate the Lithuanien independence.

In the area of "Old town" youll see around christmass time, the art projekt of Kaunas. Every year the goverment hire a local artist to set up the christmass tree, as a art project. Last year a the theme expressed the idear of christmass does not have to be about expensive or lavrish things, but it was about cellebrating a beautiful history, having a good time together and sharing love. So she involved the citys residents, and specially the children, to come and help make a tree out of green bottles, bags and homemade decorations. I have been told, it was a big success, and inspiration for many people. This year, the year 2015, the same artist has made the opposite. She wanted to use the modern features today, and made a christmass arrangement involving a interaktive treedecoration. So she made a hollow christmass tree, with televisions and a childrens pony ride carousel inside, and in front of the tree, there is a self playing piano. There are also a lot of small playhouses around it, with screens on the sites.

It is also in "Old Town" you will see a lot of different pubs and restaurents. there is one pub in particular i have been recommended called: "Pas Stanleys" -- it literally meens "at stanleys", because the owner name it after himself. It scould be a pub, where a lot young student come, and also many of the foreign students come here.

The Akropolis center is really close to th e"Old town". They have a big variarity of shops and restaurents. On the top floor they have a fastfood place "Can can pizza", i was told that there the pizzas were very good, but sadly the "magarita" i bought, was rather terrible, but the price very low - like 1,80 Euro for a magarita pizza, and maybe the other dishes and pizzaes are better. They have a great view, and the forum cinema is also located up there, along with a lot of restaurent etc.

There is also a Japanese restaurent and maxican etc.

At winter time, there is a ice scating lane on the top floor, small stand with food, and also sometimes computercafé.

If you like chinese food, my favorite place is next to the "ortopedijos technika" - thats the dental clinik of the company "Luxus surgery", in Lithuanian it is called "grozio chirurgija". The restaurent is called "Juodas", but it is the word "Sushai" that is the mark of recognition in the window. between 11-15 every day, you can get a whole meal with sald and soda along, for only 4,5 euro. - And the food is the best chinese food i EVER tasted!
